My 2019 Nautilus 2.0 L’s hood release cable broke, and I’m trying to unbolt the hood latch bar. I can barely reach the two nuts holding the bar through the grill, but I need to grind down my socket to fit. Can anyone confirm the nut size for me? Thanks

There are a couple ways to open the hood even if the hood release cable is broken. You can attempt the following steps:

Method 1: Get Straight to the Latch

Find the Latch: The hood latch is typically accessible from the front grille or below the vehicle, depending on the model.
Use a Tool: To release the hood, push or pull the latch using a flathead screwdriver or a comparable instrument if you can see the latch mechanism.

Method 2: Manually Pull the Cable

Remove the Interior Panel: You might be able to open the hood by pulling on the remaining cable or wire if you can reach the damaged cable within the cabin.
Use Pliers: To check if the cable releases the lock, grasp it firmly with pliers if there is still enough cable.

Method 3: From the Car's Underside

Jack Up the Car: To improve access, raise the front of the vehicle if you have a jack and jack stands.
Locate the latch by crawling underneath the vehicle. To release the hood, you might be able to reach it and pull it by hand.

Method 4: Release in an emergency (if any)

There are emergency hood release systems in several cars. For any model-specific instructions, consult your owner's handbook.

Additional Advice

Refer to the Manual: If you have one, you might find detailed instructions tailored to your model and make.
Seek Expert Assistance: It would be preferable to have your automobile serviced by a mechanic if you are unable to open the hood on your own.
When trying these techniques, exercise caution, particularly if you're working underneath the vehicle.

If you have a set of feeler gauges, you can try to figure out how big the nut is.

That’s a tough spot to work in! From what I’ve read, the nut size should be around 10mm or 13mm, but it’s best to double-check with a wrench if possible. Grinding down your socket sounds like a creative solution, just make sure you’re wearing safety gear.

You are close. The nuts holding the hood latch bar are M6 with a 10mm hex head, so your 10mm socket should work.

Hey, @Venom_bud if it doesn’t fit through the grille, a thin-walled socket or grinding down a standard one can help. Also, a flexible extension or universal joint adapter might make reaching those nuts easier.

Thanks for this! I’ll try a few of these methods... I am hopeful one will help me get it open.

Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll check with a wrench to confirm the size before grinding down the socket.
